iShift Citizen program – Making a difference

An awesome program has been launched in Whistler.  The program is aimed to encourage the residents of the Village to come together and create a better living environment.  Different groups will set different goals and aim to improve environmental conditions by putting their agreed solutions into practice.

This is fully backed by the Government of Canada , and in my opinion is an amazing step in the right direction:

iShift is comprised of two parts—iShift Business and iShift Citizen—each targeted to provide opportunities to get engaged with on-the-ground action toward Whistler2020. The programs are being facilitated by the Whistler Centre for Sustainability (WCS) and the Resort Municipality of Whistler, with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the Department of the Environment.

iShift Citizen encourages Whistler citizens to create solutions and take actions that lead to positive and long-lasting changes. The goal is to have 1000 Whistlerites participate in the program, resulting in nearly 6000 individual actions being taken in six months. Benefits to participants include a stronger local economy; reduced energy costs, waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and water use; improved air quality; an enhanced sense of place; and a stronger social fabric.

  1. Isn’t this a little bit like going back to grass roots community spirit. rather similar to what David Cameron is proposing in the ‘Big Idea’ that he has promoted for the past couple of years?
